Counting Cards: Method, Not Magic

The trick is to keep track of as many cards as you can in your head while tabulating the ratio between the heftier hits — the queens, kings, and aces — and the lower numbers, like the 4′s, 5′s, and 6′s. Counting cards is especially effective when playing Blackjack, because your chances are more based off of the way the cards are stacked in the deck.

Why keep a ratio? Because you have to know how to bet. If you notice after a few drops in Blackjack that more of the aces and kings have dropped, bet less. The reason why is because the chances of any other high cards showing up are less. Likewise, if more low cards drop, you can bet some of the high cards will surface. Bet high.

Not an Exact Science

But that’s okay. It’s not supposed to be. This is why Atlantic City practically encourages card counting. It’s part of the game. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it!

But know this: it does take a lot of practice, skill, patience, and timing.

Listen closely, because this might surprise you. The fact is this: counting cards in a casino is not illegal, and you most certainly can be like the Rain Man!

However, counting cards has been recognized as a skill of the mind, not a full-proof way of winning. In fact, Atlantic City practically encourages it!

You’ve got to love the Rain Man, right? Tom Cruise certainly did.

Let’s backtrack for a moment and get some background on what this is all about: horse racing. In the broader term: gambling. Richard Dreyfuss plays a guy who’s down on his luck, marriage is a little rocky, temptation’s high, and he has what many might call a ‘gambling problem.’

But something happens to him. He takes a trip to the horse races and has an epiphany! Suddenly he’s winning race after race after race, paying off all his debts, treating his wife to treasures no one would ever know, and wouldn’t you know it? — by the end of the film, it’s definitely suggested that he utterly quits the addiction of gambling for good.

Why? Because he doesn’t need it anymore. He not only won a ton of money, much more than he ever needs and wants; but he won over his own respect, the respect of his wife, and realizes that it’s not about the money –

It’s about giving back, and settling everything you owe.
